• Chevrolet Silverado — the big one is hydraulic lifter tick. On the V8 trucks with AFM/DOD cylinder deactivation, a lifter on one of the deactivating cylinders collapses and you get a steady tap that is loudest at idle and light throttle. Some people live with it for months; it does not get quieter, and it can take a camshaft lobe with it. I listen to it running, check oil pressure and pull live data before anything comes apart.
• Dodge Challenger — same story, different badge. The pushrod V8 develops a lifter tick in the same pattern as the GM trucks. The trick is separating a real lifter from an exhaust manifold leak, which sounds almost identical when the engine is cold and quiets down as it warms up.
• Infiniti Q50 — premature brake pad wear is the number one Q50 complaint I get. These go through front pads faster than most sedans, and stop-and-go on I-95 and US-441 speeds that up. If the pedal also feels spongy or drops toward the floor, check the brake master cylinder — 2014 through 2016 Q50s are prone to master cylinder failure, and that one is not something to put off.
• Cadillac CTS — three repeat offenders. Ignition coil pack failure that throws a misfire code and a flashing check engine light, wheel bearing and hub wear you hear as a hum that changes when you turn, and water pump failure that shows up as slow coolant loss and a temp gauge climbing while you sit in traffic.
• Kia Sedona — the power sliding door motor is the call I get most: door stops halfway, beeps at you, or only moves by hand. After that it is AC compressor failure, which you notice fast in a Broward August with a van full of kids, plus alternator wear and valve cover gasket leaks that leave a burning-oil smell at the vents.
• Chrysler 200 — the 9-speed automatic. Rough shifts, delayed engagement when you drop it into drive, hunting between gears at low speed. A good amount of the time this is a transmission software and fluid-condition issue rather than a dead unit, and it is worth scanning the transmission module before anyone quotes you a rebuild.
